Split Air Conditioner

A split air conditioner is exactly what its name suggests. Instead of circulating air in one body, a split unit separates the air conditioner into hot and cold sections. Some homeowners may prefer this set-up for several different reasons but it isn’t always the best choice for all homes.

In a split system, the hot section houses the condenser and is located outside the house or structure. It is connected by pipes to the cold section which is positioned inside the house. The cold section houses the air handling unit, the cold coil and the expansion valve. The air handler is responsible for blowing air through the coils and into the ducts to the different parts of a house.

Split units are essentially central air conditioning systems. They do differ from other systems though since the ducts are smaller and easier to install. Hence, even if a split unit is more expensive than other types, homeowners may be able to save when it comes to installation.

Homeowners can also save when it comes to maintenance costs. Because the unit has a split body, repairs can be performed separately as opposed to single units that have to be opened entirely. This also means the general maintenance procedure is less difficult than that of other unit types.

Aside from ease of maintenance, a split air conditioner is also more appealing because it produces less noise compared to single window units. This is because the condenser is located outside the house structure.

Split units can be installed in both houses and office buildings. Large structures however often require large systems with external condensers the size of a room. Often though, split units are best for large houses and not buildings. Installing in houses is often more advisable than in buildings because installing in large structures can present problems when it comes to connecting the external and internal parts. The pipes required to make the connection may be insufficient. Extensive duct work also has to be performed in order to provide cool air to every room.

For small houses, a ductless mini split unit is a good option. This is obviously because installing ducts are not necessary. The absence of ducts means less energy is lost. Consequently homeowners are able to save on energy costs. The small size of a split unit makes it perfect for apartments or single room offices.

One other advantage of a ductless system is that it is easier to install than those with ducts. Aside from the absence of ducts, the hole required to connect the indoor and outdoor components is smaller than that required for a regular unit.

One challenge with ductless systems is evaluating the appropriateness of a unit for a specific room area. Units that are too large and that are improperly installed can lead to energy loss.

In summary, a split air conditioner is a good choice if you plan to use it in a house or single room office. Its quiet, cost effective and efficient function makes it highly
